October 24

«United Nations Day»

In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 October, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as which "shall be devoted to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for" its work.
In 1971 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a further resolution (United Nations Resolution 2782) declaring that United Nations Day shall be an international holiday and recommended that it should be observed as a public holiday by all United Nations member states.
United Nations Day is devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization.

  1. I'd like to add that in 1972, the United Nations General Assembly decided to institute a World Development Information Day coinciding with United Nations Day on 24 October. The General Assembly had the object of drawing the attention of world public-opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them.
The day was further recognized as the date on which the International Development Strategy for the Second Nations Development Decade was adopted in 1970.
In recent years many events have interpreted the title of the day slightly differently. These have concentrated on the role that modern information-technologies, such as the Internet and mobile telephones can play in alerting people and finding solutions to problems of trade and development. One of the specific aims of World Development Information Day was to inform and motivate young people and this change may help to further this aim.

  2. On October 24, 1945, the United Nations (UN) came into force when the five permanent members of the security council ratified the charter that had been drawn up earlier that year. These members were: France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Since 1948, the event's anniversary has been known as United Nations Day. It is an occasion to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the United Nations and its family of specialized agencies.

The generations born after the founding of the UN in 1945 have come to realize that the UN offers no “quick fix” to international problems but that it is an essential instrument through which multilateral processes can be brought to bear to contribute to the solutions to global problems. A United Nations Day programme offers an opportunity to groups and individuals to acquaint themselves with the activities and the accomplishments of the UN – and to address the challenges we face together as the world moves into a new century.

  3. The United Nations Day is celebrated in each country in different way. But most countries time this date to very important and significant for every state meetings, discussions and political events.
Traditionally, in the USA authorities of most cities hoisted flags of the UN organization and organized in educational institutions special seminars in honour of this great holiday.

Speaking about celebration of this date in this year,I'd like to note that some US cities didn't celebrate the United Nations Day. Thus, Norton, a small town in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, refused to celebrate this holiday. Autority of this town explained such decision in following way: according to them the world organization no longer plays its significany role in the international relationships as it played before.

  4. United Nations Day, or UN Day, celebrates the organization dedicated to world peace and the betterment of humanity through programs for world hunger to environment and health issues. Almost all of the countries in the world are members of this organization. United Nations Day is held on the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter on October 24th, 1945. It was declared a holiday in 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly. A further resolution in 1971 established United Nations Day as an International holiday and encouraged recognition by all member countries.
