  1. Helen Hayes Brown (October 10, 1900 – March 17, 1993) was an American actress whose career spanned almost 70 years. She eventually garnered the nickname "First Lady of the American Theatre" and was one of eleven people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. Hayes also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor, from President Ronald Reagan in 1986.[1] In 1988, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts. The annual Helen Hayes Awards, which have recognized excellence in professional theatre in the greater Washington, D.C. area since 1984, are her namesake. In 1955 the former Fulton Theatre on 46th Street in New York City's Broadway theater district was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre. When that venue was torn down in 1982, the nearby Little Theatre was renamed in her honor.

  2. Ed Wood was a movie Director, screenwriter, actor, and producer.Wood often struggled to make ends meet and was sometimes forced to churn out film scripts in one night to keep to schedules.

Wood's legacy and cult following lives on with, for example, the University of Southern California holding an annual "Ed Wood Film Festival" for which students are charged with writing, filming, and editing an Ed Wood-esque short film based on a predetermined theme. His movies has been spoofed on Mystery Theater 3000 and many have been remade as pornographic movies. Additionally, many of his bizarre transvestite-themed sex novels have been republished.

Nobody would mistake his movies for good ones, but he approached his movies with an enthusiasm that carries through to the finished product. The one cardinal sin of moviemaking is to make your movie boring, and Wood's movies never are. They're cheap, poorly acted, contain mind-numbing dialogue, and feature special effects that wouldn't fool a goldfish, but they're never dull.

  3. I just found 10 Facts About William H. Seward !
    1. Born May 16, 1801, this U.S. Secretary of State under Lincoln died on October 10, 1872.

    2. He is today best known for “Seward’s Folly,” his championing of the purchase of Alaska from the Russians. Ridiculed by many at the time, it has proven to be a wise investment.

    3. An ardent opponent of slavery, he nonetheless advocated a measured political approach to the issue, due to its divisiveness.

    4. A lawyer, Seward was one of the first to use the insanity defense in the case of a mentally disturbed African-American who had killed four white people and ion the case of an unbalanced prisoner who had killed another prisoner. Both were convicted, although the former’s conviction was overturned upon appeal to the NY Supreme Court.

    5. On the night of Lincoln’s assassination, a co-conspirator attacked Seward at home in his bed, stabbing him and injuring two of his sons, a nurse and a messenger. (All survived.)

    6. Seward was criticized by many for staying on as Secretary of State under Andrew Johnson, a move seen by many as smacking of opportunism and vanity. (If you can imagine a politician being described in suhc words.)

    7. Although born in Florida, Seward is more strongly associated with New York state, where he spent much of his adult life.

    8. Seward served as both Governor of New York and as a U.S. Senator from the state. (No, not at the same time.)

    9. Seward is credited with helping to smooth over an incident early in the Civil War, said by one source to be comparable in importance to the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s, in which a British ship was captured by a Union supporter. Seward’s tact and diplomacy averted what could have developed into full scale support of Britain for the Confederacy. (I, on the other hand, have a hard time keeping my sisters from tearing out each others’ throats.)

    10. Starting out as a Whig, Seward switched allegiance to the Republican Party in 1855; his loss of the Presidential nomination to Lincoln five years later was regarded as something of an upset. (Which brings up the question – how old WAS the Republican Party when it earne dthe nickname Grand OLD Party?)

  4. Christopher Reeve: "So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable."
Christopher Reeve (1952-2004) was an actor best known for playing Superman in four films. His other film credits include Somewhere in Time (with William H. Macy), Deathtrap (with Michael Caine), Noises Off (with Caine, Carol Burnett and John Ritter) and a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window which he also directed.
Known the world over as Superman, Christopher Reeve served as a symbol of strength, the force of good, with the ability to fly and soar over the problems of man. He was strength and mobility personified to people throughout the world.
